Small friendly guest house in Bagan

While I was living in Chin Hills, I used to travel a lot to Southern Chin towns of Mindat and Kanpetlet quite often. Many a time, I traveled to Chin Hills from Yangon through Bagan. On my way back to Yangon also, I usually stayed in Bagan for a night before continuing my trip. Always, I stayed in the same guest house. It is cheap, clean, tidy, and comfortable with friendly owner and staff.

Maykahlar Guest House is a small guest house in Nyaung-Oo town. This is a town just two miles away from old Bagan city. Famous Shwezigone Pagoda is situated in Nyaung-Oo. The guest house is situated on the main road that runs through the town of Nyaung-Oo. It is a two storey brick building with twin bed rooms. The rooms are quite small but enough for two people to stay together. There is an attached bathroom in each room with cold and hot water. (There is a tap for hot water, but I could never make hot water coming out of this tap. May be, the machine is broken.) The beds are clean and comfortable. All the rooms are equipped with air-cons. In case the electricity is cut of, which is quite often, the guest house will run the electric generator. The guest house provides towels but apart from that, there is nothing provided – no TV, no free drinking water, no fridge, no breakfast. You can watch the satellite TV in the living room of the guest house.

The fee for foreigners is US$ 5 per person. That was in 2007 but I don’t think it changes much, especially during this time of low tourist arrival.

The staffs are especially helpful and friendly. If you want anything – change money, hire a car or a bicycle, book bus or air ticket, just tell the guest house staff and they will arrange for you. I stayed there several times and became friends with owners and staffs. I believe you will find the Maykhalar Guest House a nice and friendly, but cheap place to stay in Bagan.

You can book a room at the guest house at +95-(0)61-60304 and +95-(0)61-60907.

  1. Thank you for that.

I would like to ask about the ferry from Yangon to Mandalay which evdently goes via Bagan.
How long does a trip like that take, from Yangon to Bagan and what would the cost be?
