History According to legend, Shwedagon Pagoda was built more than 2,500 years ago during the time of Lord Buddha. The two merchant brothers from then Okkalapa (now Yangon) met with Gautama Buddha shortly after he attained enlightenment, and became the first disciples of Lord Buddha. Gautama Buddha gave them eight hair relics which they brought back to their country. In Okkalapa, they built the first pagoda in the history of Buddhism, Shwedagon on the holy Singuttara Hill. Although there is no archeological evidence to support this official story, most Buddhists in Myanmar and around the world believe in this story and Shwedagon becomes one of the most important centers of Buddhism. For detailed history of Shwedagon Pagoda, please see the article Shwedagon Pagoda History. Stairways (Zaung-dans) Most visitors to Shwedagon Pagoda climbed up the Singuttara Hill by one of four stairways or zaungdans. Shwedagon Pagoda, like most other pagodas in Myanmar, has four stairways or zaungdans, one on each side of the pagoda (north, south, east and west). The stairway that is most used by the foreign visitors is the Southern Stairway, which ascends from the direction of the city center. The stairway starts immediately at the end of the [...]

Shwedagon Pagoda Guide is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

This is about nine wonders of Shwedagon Pagoda. For a complete guide, see the article Complete Shwedagon Pagoda Guide. Traditionally, Burmese believe that there are nine wonders in Shwedagon Pagoda. Burmese Buddhists believe these wonders could grant your wishes come true. 1. Tawagu Wish-Fulfilling Buddha, which is located in a niche behind the Eastern Stairway, on the upper platform. Only men are allowed into this upper platform but there is a television in the Eastern Devotion Hall where the CCTV image of the Tawagu Buddha Image is shown. Burmese believe this Buddha image can grant your wish to come true. 2. The Weitzer Zawgyi Pagoda (Pagoda of Wizards and Necromancers) near the Saturday Corner, which is in the South-West corner of the main Shwedagon stupa. The small pagoda is decorated with figures of wizards and necromencers. It was built by Daw Oo of Sint Oo Dan Street, Yangon. The popular belief is that this stupa was built with the use of supernatural powers. Some people believe higher beings come and meditate here quite often. 3. Shin Saw Pu (Shin Saw Bu) Buddha Image near north-west corner was built by Queen Shin Saw Pu of Hansawaddy (Hanthawaddy) Dynasty, who is the [...]

Shwedagon Pagoda Guide – Nine wonders of Shwedagon Pagoda is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Myanmar is a country rich in history, culture, custom and tradition. It also has a number of tourist attractions, with many more unknown and yet undiscovered tourist attractions. Many of Myanmar’s popular tourist attractions are famous all over the world. The following is a brief description of some of Myanmar’s popular and famous tourist attractions. Shwedagon Pagoda – Probably the most famous tourist attraction in Myanmar, Shwedagon is synonymous with Myanmar. Considered to be the oldest pagoda on Earth, it is the centre of Buddhism in Myanmar. The pagoda is believed to be covered in 30 tons of gold (some say 60 tons, no body knows the exact amount), with a large number of jewels buried inside the pagoda. There is also a collection of best Myanmar arts and crafts in Shwedagon as most of the shrines are decorated in best Myanmar sculptures and wood curving. Bagan - Land of thousand pagodas. With more than 2,000 ancient pagodas scattered over and around the ancient capital of Myanmar, Bagan is perhaps the most visited place in Myanmar, and the reason most visitors come to Myanmar. It is the capital of the first Myanmar empire, and was believed to have been built [...]

Myanmar’s Famous and Popular Tourist Attractions is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

The following is the translation from the blog by Ma Ma written in Burmese. The original article can be found at On Shwedagon. “…… I was quite inquisitive about everything. One day while I was going to Shwedagon as usual, I happened to know about the donation boxes in Shwedagon Pagoda. I was at Chanthargyi Shrine when I saw a young short thin guy carrying the locked donation boxes every night at around 9 PM. He carried all the donation boxes on Shwedagon, not a single night, but every night, and kept them all at the specific place. It was so strange. Even when we were young when the pagoda was open to the public all night long, I never saw or heard anybody kept these donation boxes in a safe place like this. Nowadays when the pagoda gates closes at 10 PM, only the guards are left on Shwedagon Pagoda. Carrying all donation boxes like this every night seemed to me like a punishment to this small boy. I was quite inquisitive, so I asked this young boy who gave him this kind of punishment. He looked very surprised. I asked again why and where he carried them away [...]

Shwedagon donation box rumour is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Yangon (Rangoon) is the former administrative capital of Myanmar (Burma). Although the government has moved the capital to Naypyidaw, Yangon remains the commercial capital of Myanmar (Burma). Yangon is the only port of entry in Myanmar, and because there are many historical places in Yangon, it is worth visiting the City a few days before traveling up country. Brief Historical Note Yangon was established by King Alaungphaya in 1755.
