New system of visa on arrival was started in both Yangon (Rangoon) and Mandalay. Start from 1st May, visitors to Myanmar can apply for the new arrival visa at Yangon (Rangoon) International Airport and Mandalay International Airport. Myanmar has previously issued arrival visa in the past. However, these were not real arrival visa. Visitors had to apply through travel agents a few days in advanced before coming to Myanmar (Burma). The visitor needed to bring the approval letter together with them and showed them to the immigration officer at the airport. Under the new system, visitors no longer need to apply in advanced. They can apply at the airport for the 28 days tourist arrival visa, which cannot be extended. Visa fees will be US$ 30 per person. All nationalities except those in the government black list will be issued arrival visa. There are some formalities for the application process. The immigration officer will check whether the applicant has the return ticket, have enough money and the address in Myanmar while he is in the country. The immigration officer might also ask for the purpose of the visit. Apart from 28 days tourist visa, business visa on arrival can also [...]

New Myanmar Visa on Arrival is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

A number of local news journals have published the accounts of the bomb blast in Yangon during Thingyan New Year Water Festival. Excerpts from Eleven News local media are translated here for our visitors. “My father is a hundred-household chief (local administrative council member). On that day, he was working as a security at the Myanmar Medical Association Pandal around Kandawgyi Lake. He went there since 7 AM, came back home at 12 for lunch and went back again at 2 PM. Around 3, I heard two loud explosions. A few seconds later, I heard another explosion. One of our friends told us that my father was hit in the bomb explosion. He fell down when the bomb exploded. He was still breathing at that time, but was not conscious anymore. His niece brought him to the nearby Worker’s Hospital immediately, but was dead by the time he arrived there. “ Recount from daughter of bomb victim U Khin Maung Lay “My mother was sleeping in the morning. My niece wanted to go so at around 2 PM, my mother, my sister and my niece went out there. They were standing and watching at the end of 125th street opposite [...]

News from local media about Yangon Bomb Blast is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Myanmar (Burmese) state media on September 24 announced the distribution of new currency notes from the central bank of Myanmar. The new notes are in 5000 kyat denomination, and will be started distribution on first October. The new note will be the same size as other notes currently in use in Myanmar. Currently, the largest currency note in Myanmar is 1000 kyat, which is approximately US$ 0.90. Rumors of new 5000 kyat notes had been circulating in Myanmar since 2006. Due to massive inflation in Myanmar, many Myanmar people have to carry hundreds of one thousand kyat notes whenever they go shopping. It is not unusual to see people carrying thousand kyat notes in large plastic bags in the markets of Myanmar. Many people welcome the news of new 5000 kyat notes by the Central Bank. However, it also causes some panic among locals in Myanmar, which causes unofficial (black market) US dollar – Myanmar kyat exchange rate to rise. US dollar exchange rate in Myanmar was 1070 kyat for one dollar before the announcement. The next day, on 25th September, the rate shoots up to 1160 kyat for one US dollar.
Myanmar State television reported that 7,114 convicted prisoners across the country will be released from prison. However, it was not clear how many of then will be political prisoners. The amnesty was granted for good behaviour and humanitarian ground. The amnesty comes just ahead of the opening of this year’s U.N. General Assembly session, which will be attended by Prime Minister Gen. Thein Sein, the highest-ranking government leader in recent years to participate. In another breaking news, a series of seven small explosions hit the outskirt of Yangon (Rangoon) today. Five blasts went off at the Hlaing Tharyar industrial zone in western Yangon and a separate explosion occurred at another industrial zone in Shwepaukan on the city’s northern outskirts in the pre-dawn hours. A separate seventh explosion took place at around 10 Am Thursday in the Mingalardon Industrial Park, in the north of Yangon. No casualties were reported. Meanwhile, a new political party was formed by veteran politicians and headed by three daughters of former prime ministers of Myanmar during parliamentary democracy period. The new party, the Democratic Party, was formed by U Thu Wai in Yangon. The daughters of U Nu, U Ba Swe and U Kyaw Nyein, who were once [...]

Myanmar Today News brief is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.
