One of our visitors to our site asked whether it is easy to find a Muslim Halal food stall or restaurant in Myanmar. Although Myanmar is not a Muslim majority country, it is a multi cultural, multi religious country. Thus it is fairly easy, especially in large cities and towns, to find a Muslim Halal restaurant or food stall that caters not only the Muslim population, but also caters for the local non-Muslim population. Actually, contrary to outsiders’ believe, Muslim food is quite popular among the local Burmese people. Most of the shops that sell Muslim Halal food are small to medium size restaurants or food stalls. There are a few Muslim Halal restaurants that serve Chinese food, but they are not very popular, and only a few can be found even in a large city like Yangon (Rangoon). Most of the time, it is shops that serve traditional Indian and Muslim food that are popular among the local people. These small restaurants and food stalls serve traditional Indian and Muslim food such as nan, roti, prata, puri, dosai, mutton curry, potato curry, beef curry and kabab. These food are quite popular among local Muslim population as well as non Muslim Burmese.
Mandalay has a number of good Indian restaurants which sell delicious chapati, puri, dhals, roti, chicken curry, mutton curry, potato curry and various vegetable curries. Most of these Indian restaurants are clusttered around 27th Street, between 80th and 81st streets. Most Indian restaurants that sell delicious but cheap Indian food are either open air restaurants or opened in old buildings. But don’t judge the quality of the food by the appearance of the restaurant. They sell very nice food. Moreover, the open air restaurants offer a unique opportunity for people watching too. While enjoying hot curry with freshly made chapati, you can enjoy watching local diners in turbans, longyis (sarong) and skull caps enjoying their evening meal. http://www.flickr.com/photos/andurinha/ / CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 If you want a nice Nepali vegetable dishes, head to a Lonely Planet recommended Nepali Food restaurant on 81st Street, between 26th and 27th streets.
This is a favorite Burmese food. Originally from Chinese community in Myanmar, it has become a popular food in cities. Called “Wet-Thar-Dote-Htoe”, it literally means “Pork on Stick”. Various parts of the pig are cooked with soy-bean sauce and seasoning. The parts include carious internal organs like intestine, liver, kidney, spleen, heart, lungs, tongue as well as meat, skin and cartilage. They are then cut into small pieces, and put on tiny bamboo sticks and served. The vendor usually sells on the road side, with all the food served on a large metal pan with charcoal stove underneath. Customers sit around the pan and eat the food dipped in sauce. The meat is really delicious. If you want to try one, just walk in the streets of downtown Yangon. There are many shops there.
Teashops are important and integral part of life in Myanmar. As a foreigner who first arrives to Myanmar, you will be surprised to see so many teashops in Yangon and everywhere in Myanmar. They are everywhere in every street. And there are always customers in every teashop. Nowhere in South-East Asia would you find such a large number of teashop. When I was young, there were not as many teashops as now. And the attitude of our parents at that time was that “sitting at a teashop” is a waste of time. We, me and my friends, were always told not to sit at a teashop. That was 15 years ago. Now, everything changed. Myanmar people use the word “sit at a teashop” because we really sit at a teashop for a very long time, sometimes even hours, after ordering just a cup of tea. The teashop may sell a few snacks. And there is always free flow of plain green tea. You can order as much plain tea as you like free of charge. So the main reason we sit at a teashop is just to sit, and chat. Well, there is more than just sit and chat Teashops [...]

Teashops in Myanmar is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

If you want to have good Shan noodle in Yangon, go no other than “999″ Shan Noodle on 34th Street, Mid Bloc (where the City Hall is situated). The restaurant is quite clean and tidy, and sells good quality food. They also provide English language menu so it is quite convenient to bring foreigner friends there. The noodle is less oily, thus quite palatable to the foreigners. Shan Sour Rice here is quite excellent. Food here is a bit oily, but still quite delicious. Pig Intestine Salad here is quite delicious. Don’t forget to try Lasaho 7 layered Paut-Si too. Contributed by Bamarlay.
