Although Bagan is the major tourist place in Myanmar, and most visited place in Myanmar by foreign and local tourists, cheap hotels and guest house are still plentiful in Bagan. All of them serve both local and foreign tourists. Below are a few in Nyaung U that are usually recommended by visitors. Please be mindful that most of them have standard or limited facility and might not serve breakfast. During peak tourist season, they may be readily full, so book in advance. May Khalar Guest House My favorite! I stay here whenever I visit Bagan. The owner and the staffs are friendly, and the price is cheap. There is no breakfast provided, but there are many tea shops and cheap (but nice) restaurants near by. The rooms and clean but basic. There is air condition in every room, and hot and cold water is available. There is a back up electric generator during the time of frequent electric outbreak, but it is not enough for air-con. Cheap and budget as well as mid range hotels and guesthouses can be found in Nyaungshwe, the entrance town to Inle. Hotels and resorts on Inle Lake tend to be high end and quite expensive. Nyaungshwe Most budget and midrange guesthouses and hotels in Nyaungshwe are family owned and operated. Most of them offer friendly home like warmth to the customers. Most guest houses and hotels will offer off-season discount, but you might be able to negotiate room rate even at peak tourist season. They also act as travel agents for their customers, book flights and buses, arrange taxis, boat trips and hiking, and help you to find local tour guides. As the weather is cool, air-condition is not a necessity in Nyaungshwe. Cheap and Budget Aquarius Inn This small but quiet and friendly inn has all-wood rooms and quite cozy to stay. The staffs are friendly and they serve excellent breakfast. At US$ 6 to 12 per night, this is an excellent choice for budget travelers. Budget hotels and Inns April Inn A little outside the downtown Maymyo, April inn is located in a quiet and tranquil place. It has six bungalows, each with private bathroom, TV, twin beds and a porch for breakfast. Beware of insects and mosquitoes. Price is US$ 8 per person, US$ 16 for double room. Address is 51F, Eindaw Street, Maymyo, phone 085-21918. Dahlia Motel This friendly hotel run by an outgoing Muslim is located a little off downtown. This is a popular low budget motel in a peaceful residential neighborhood. All rooms have TV and private bathrooms. Prices start from US$ 5 for standard single room. Private hotels and Guesthouses For those who want to avoid government run hotels for any reason, Maymyo (Pyinoolwin) has a number of nice hotels. A number of new private owned hotels open after 1988. Some of these are listed below. Midrange Hotels Kandawgyi Lodge This one was open in 2002 as a Singapore joint venture hotel. It was a converted 1921 English Warden’s lodge near Kandawgyi lake, with new bungalows in the garden outside. All rooms are facing the Kandawgyi Lake. There is no TV or phone in the rooms – this is a hotel to take a real rest! The hotel is situated in Nandar Road, Maymyo, phone 085-21839, 21840, 01-20 20 71 (Yangon for booking), fax: 085-22497. Maymyo accommodation Maymyo (Pyinoolwin) has a number of cheap budget hotels as well as mid range to high end hotels. Usually, all hotels inside the town are budget hotels while those higher end hotels are usually found in the residential areas around the ring road. Some of the hotels in Maymyo, especially government run hotels have long standing history running back to British colonial time. Hotel staffs are usually very friendly and helpful; typical of hotels in Myanmar. They can usually speak English and will provide you information about your travel. Government hotels – A taste of Burma’s past There are three government run hotels in Maymyo (Pyinoolwin). They are large and grand old colonial era hotels. Many foreign tourists avoid these hotels because of government affiliate. Nan Myaing Hotel (Craddock Court) This hotel is the old colonial era hotel, situated in the south west of the town, near the Mandalay-Maymyo-Lashio Road. Situated on a ground of 15 acres, this hotel was a colonial rest house during British occupation of Burma. Mandalay Swan Hotel – best midrange hotel in Mandalay

For those international travelers looking for a nice mid level accommodation in Mandalay, Mandalay Swan Hotel is the hotel for you. Located just close to the Mandalay Royal Palace Fort and the moat, the hotel is in a place where it is easy to travel in Mandalay. Especially in the evening, you can take a leisurely stroll along the moat just in front of the hotel. I always had a cup of sugar cane drink from a road side stall in front of the hotel on the side of the moat, with cool breeze passing over the moat water. The hotel staffs are quite friendly and helpful. I especially like their breakfast at the Swan Café which serves a very nice European breakfast. If you have to leave very early and cannot have your breakfast, you can ask the hotel staff to pack the breakfast for you at no cost. There are quite a number of cheap guest houses and hotels in Mandalay. Many of them offer nice rooms, friendly staff and some basic services at a cheap price. These are ideal accommodations for the budget travelers. Here are some of these cheap accommodations that are popular among the foreign travelers that got quite a fair comments and recommendations on the internet and on travel guide books. All of the following guesthouses and hotels have both fan rooms and air conditioned rooms, and the price usually includes the breakfast. Unfortunately, none of these hotels and guesthouses can be booked online so you will have to contact them by phone. A few of them have email addresses, but I cannot contact any of them by email. Small friendly guest house in Bagan

While I was living in Chin Hills, I used to travel a lot to Southern Chin towns of Mindat and Kanpetlet quite often. Many a time, I traveled to Chin Hills from Yangon through Bagan. On my way back to Yangon also, I usually stayed in Bagan for a night before continuing my trip. Always, I stayed in the same guest house. It is cheap, clean, tidy, and comfortable with friendly owner and staff. Maykahlar Guest House is a small guest house in Nyaung-Oo town. This is a town just two miles away from old Bagan city. Famous Shwezigone Pagoda is situated in Nyaung-Oo. The guest house is situated on the main road that runs through the town of Nyaung-Oo. It is a two storey brick building with twin bed rooms. The rooms are quite small but enough for two people to stay together. There is an attached bathroom in each room with cold and hot water.
