The heart of Mandalay is the King Mindon’s Royal Palace. Situated just to the south of the Mandalay Hill, it is a magnificent palace complex inside the magnificent walled fortress city. The Royal Palace was the first structure to build in King Mindon’s new royal city. It is open for visitors at a fee. History In reality, the Royal Palace was not build by King Mindon. These were actually an old palace buildings dismantled, carried and reassembled from their original place at Amarapura, the old capital. These were also carried from the old palace at Ava. The cost and labour of building a new palace is extremely high so most Burmese kings, if they ever move their capital, just move the old palace to the new place. The process of dismantling and reassembling took five years to complete. After the British occupatio of upper Burma, the royal palace and the royal fortress were occupied by the british army. The Royal Palace Fortress was renamed Fort Dufferin, and the Throne Hall was converted into British officers’ club. British also looted the palace, some of which are still on display in Victoria and Albert Museum in England. During World War 2, a small [...]

Mandalay Royal Palace is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

If you want to have a glimpse of traditional Myanmar anyient (dance and comedy show), the best place to see is in Mandalay. The Moustache Brothers Troupe (Mustache Brothers) is a group of banned anyient comedians, once famous among the people of Myanmar but now banned from performing in front of general public for their political activities. They perform their show every evening at 8:30 PM at their home in Mandalay. Because of restrictions imposed on the troupe, the performence cannot be done in full traditional costume. They perform their performence in normal dress, announcing that they are merely demonstrating what the actual Myanmar traditional anyient looks like. This is a mean to circumvent their public performence restriction. The three moustache brothers are Par Par Lay, Lu Maw and Lu Zaw. Par Par Lay used to be a very well known comedian in Myanmar, until his arrest and prison sencente, together with one of his brothers, for seven years. They were arrested after their performence in 1995 at the Myanmar Independence Day performence at NLD head quarter (then at the house of Aung San Su Kyi). They were released in 2000, after serving five of their seven years term, but [...]

Mandalay Entertainment – Moustache Brothers is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

For those international travelers looking for a nice mid level accommodation in Mandalay, Mandalay Swan Hotel is the hotel for you. Located just close to the Mandalay Royal Palace Fort and the moat, the hotel is in a place where it is easy to travel in Mandalay. Especially in the evening, you can take a leisurely stroll along the moat just in front of the hotel. I always had a cup of sugar cane drink from a road side stall in front of the hotel on the side of the moat, with cool breeze passing over the moat water. The hotel staffs are quite friendly and helpful. I especially like their breakfast at the Swan Café which serves a very nice European breakfast. If you have to leave very early and cannot have your breakfast, you can ask the hotel staff to pack the breakfast for you at no cost. That was what I did when I had to leave the hotel at 4:30 AM in the morning for my boat trip to Bagan. The hotel has 100 standard, superior and junior suits. The rooms are very clean and well furnished, with air condition, satellite TV, IDD phone, and mini [...]

Mandalay Swan Hotel – best midrange hotel in Mandalay is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

There are quite a number of cheap guest houses and hotels in Mandalay. Many of them offer nice rooms, friendly staff and some basic services at a cheap price. These are ideal accommodations for the budget travelers. Here are some of these cheap accommodations that are popular among the foreign travelers that got quite a fair comments and recommendations on the internet and on travel guide books. All of the following guesthouses and hotels have both fan rooms and air conditioned rooms, and the price usually includes the breakfast. Unfortunately, none of these hotels and guesthouses can be booked online so you will have to contact them by phone. A few of them have email addresses, but I cannot contact any of them by email. Please book a few days in advanced as they will be filled up quickly during peak seasons. Peacock Lodge – Lonely Planet recommendation This one is recommended by the popular guide book Lonely Planet. It also receives a number of good comment and recommendations on the travel and hotel websites. Situated near the Mandalay Royal Palace Fort, the Peacock Lodge guesthouse offers “a village like peace”, according to the Lonely Planet guide book. The guesthouse [...]

Cheap budget hotels and guest houses in Mandalay is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Zaycho Market (also spelled Zay Cho, Zeigyo, Zaygyo, Zegyo Market) is the largest and the most important market in Mandalay as well as in upper Burma. Built since the time of King Mindon, Zaycho market is one of the oldest markets in Myanmar. Zaycho in Burmese means “cheap price”. Whether the prices are really cheap or not is difficult to answer. However, this is the market that goods and products from all over Myanmar as well as goods from India, China and Thailand are sold in lots. Zaycho market is the whole sale market as well as the retail market. You can find anything from Thai silk, Chinese (actually Burmese in origin) jade, Indian spice to Burmese handicraft, arts and jewellery. There are shops that sell food, fruits, household accessories, clothes and electronics. Upper Burma’s largest jewellery and gold market can be found here occupying the whole floor of one of the buildings. In 1990s, the government demolished the old market buildings and rebuilt new ones in the place. There are now 8 market buildings, all of them four storey buildings except one which is six stories.
Shweinbin Monastery This beautiful monastery is located in the south west corner of Mandalay City, on 89th street between 38th and 39th streets. Called simply by the locals as “Teak Monastery”, it was built in 1895 by a Chinese jade merchant U Set Shwin. It has very fine 19th century wood carvings and wood arts depicting the life of Gautama Buddha. These are carved in beautiful detailed carvings. The whole building is on a classical teak foundation with long teak poles. The monastery is very peaceful and rarely crowded. The surrounding of the monastery is also like a small peaceful village of monks. Famous Ma Soe Yein Monastery is just across the bridge to the south of Shweinbin Monastery. Setkyathiha Pagoda This pagoda is situated at the corner of 31st Street and 85th Street. Built by King Thibaw in 1884, the main interest of the pagoda is the large 5 meter tall seated bronze image of Gautama Buddha. Originally cast by King Bagyidaw of Ava in 1823 in Ava (Inwa, the old capital just near Mandalay on the bank of Irrawaddy / Ayeyarwaddy River), the image was subsequently moved to Amarapura in 1849 (when the Burmese capital was moved to [...]

Mandalay Travel Guide – pagodas and monasteries in the town is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.
