Apart from places in Nyaungshwe, there are a number of places and villages in and around Inle Lake that will make your visit to Inle quite interesting and worthwhile. You can see the way of life of Intha which are quite adept to the environment of Inle Lake, their culture and custom as well as daily life of ordinary people of Inle Lake. You should hire a boat for the whole day and should plan in advanced for the trip and make agreement with the boatman when hiring the boat. Make sure the boatman agrees to the whole trip before agreeing the boat fee. Khaung Daing This intha village in the north-western shore of Inle Lake is especially well known for hot springs nearby. Khaung Daing village can be reached by car directly from Taunggyi (capital of Shan State, 2 hours drive), from Nyaungshwe by car(one and half hour drive) or bicycle, or from the lake by boat (30 minute from Nyaungshwe and 5 minute drive from the boat pier to the village). Main reason people go to Khaung Daing village is to bath in the hot springs near the village. There are both public bath places as well as [...]

Around Inle Lake is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

The following video from Youtube shows a typical boat trip in Inle Lake. You can see the way Inthas build their houses on the lake, and what a typical Intha village looks like. Near the end of the video, you will see a group of Inthas working on their boat, standing. Enjoy the scenery of Inle before going there. In this second video, you can see the Inle’s world famous unique style of fishing. When fishing, Inthas row their boats using one foot while standing on the boat with another foot. They use a large fish net to catch fish while standing and rowing at the same time. This is indeed a very difficult task, both maintaining your balance and rowing at the same time. The reason for rowing standing, according to one of my intha friend, is because of so many water hyacinth growing in the lake water. You cannot see these water hyacinth if you row your boat sitting. Therefore, you have to stand up and row to avoid these annoying water plants. I am not sure whether this explanation is true or not, but my intha friend insisted that this is the actual reason for rowing stand [...]

Video of Inle Lake is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Nyaungshwe, which is the entrance town to the north of Inle Lake is a laid back town filled with tourists. There are only a few places to see in Nyaungshwe. However, these places are worth a visit while you are in Nyaungshwe. Museum of Shan Chiefs (Sao Pha) This teak-and-brick building is the haw (palace) of the 33rd and last Sao Pha (prince) of Nyaungshwe, Sao Shwe Thaike. The museum is situated in the northern part of the town. Inside the museum is the display of the shan furnitures and royal costumes. The walls are decorated with dark wood carving, and the royal couples’ throne still stands in the reception hall. The palace itself retained little of its former charms and glories of the past. The last Sao Pha Sao Shwe Thaike was the first president of the independence Union of Burma. He was arrested during 1962 military coup and later died in Insein Prison. His body was buried in Nyaungshwe near the football ground by the canal. There is a small entrance fee of US$ 2 to the museum. Shwe Yawnghwe Monastery Photo by Markku A Near the Shan Palace, a little way outside the town, is the Shwe Yawnghwe [...]

Nyaungshwe sight seeing is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Hotels and resorts in Inle Lake tend to be high-end and expensive. Most of them are in the range of US$ 30 – 60 while a few are as expensive as US$ 150 or more. All hotels are built on stilts like floating villages over Inle Lake. They are in the quiet isolated places and quite far away from Nyaungshwe, thus best suited to the travelers who like a tranquil life far away from busy town life. All the hotels have their own web pages and can be booked online. Reservation is recommended especially in the high season as rooms are filled up quite easily during peak tourist season. Golden Island Cottages There are two Golden Island Cottages in Inle Lake, one near the village of Nampan and the other near the village of Tale U. The Golden Island Cottage is, according to Lonely Planet Guide Book, the equivalent of “prime beach-front property”. Golden Island Cottages Nampan occupies 10 acres of water over Inle Lake. All the rooms are single bungalows built of bamboo. Newer bungalows are built of wood and are better value than the older bamboo bungalows. The resort has a fantastic and unobstructed view of Inle Lake [...]

High end luxury hotels and resorts in Inle is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Inle – Nyaungshwe region has a few midrange hotels which offer more comfort than budget hotels with much better facility. All these hotels have private bathrooms with hot-shower, satellite TV, air-con and fridge. The following are the midrange hotels in Inle – Nyaungshwe region. Nanda Wunn Hotel This hotel situated in a large quiet compound a few blocks east of the Nyaungshwe Market is only a few bucks more expensive than other budget hotels but the larger, superior bungalows with high ceiling, individual porches and bathrooms with bath tubs deserve that few extra bucks. Although the location is a little outside the town center, Nyaungshwe is a small town and a bicycle (or even walking) is sufficient for you to travel all over the town. Staffs at Nanda Wunn Hotel are quite friendly and will arrange boats, bicycle and guides for your trip. Comments on Trip Advisor by previous visitors: “The hotel is located on the main street very near the most recommended places to eat, the Aung Puppet Show (don’t miss this), and the incredible massage place run by the Win Nyunt family. The staffs were helpful but not overly friendly and a very nice breakfast was included in the [...]

Inle Nyaungshwe mid-range hotels is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Cheap and budget as well as mid range hotels and guesthouses can be found in Nyaungshwe, the entrance town to Inle. Hotels and resorts on Inle Lake tend to be high end and quite expensive. Nyaungshwe Most budget and midrange guesthouses and hotels in Nyaungshwe are family owned and operated. Most of them offer friendly home like warmth to the customers. Most guest houses and hotels will offer off-season discount, but you might be able to negotiate room rate even at peak tourist season. They also act as travel agents for their customers, book flights and buses, arrange taxis, boat trips and hiking, and help you to find local tour guides. As the weather is cool, air-condition is not a necessity in Nyaungshwe. Cheap and Budget Aquarius Inn This small but quiet and friendly inn has all-wood rooms and quite cozy to stay. The staffs are friendly and they serve excellent breakfast. At US$ 6 to 12 per night, this is an excellent choice for budget travelers. There is a small library with a good collection of foreign language books for loan to the guests. The address is 2 Phaung Saw Pyan Road, Inle Lake, Nyaungshwe, Shan State; phone 081-29352. Around 800 years ago, they served in the army of Burmese Kings. On their military excursion, they arrived to Inle Lake region. Once they saw the Lake, it reminds them of their homeland. They asked permission from the King to stay around the lake. This was granted by the king, and thus, these soldiers stayed here and became Inthas. Inthas have a unique way of living.
