Kanpetlet is, for me, the most beautiful town in the whole Chin Hills. It is also a tourist attraction, the only tourist attract in Chin state, apart from nearby Mindat, although the yearly visitor is probably less than 100. There is the famous Mount Victoria with Natmataung (Khawnuthom) National Park which is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar. There are currently two guest houses in Kanpetlet. They are actually small resorts located in a beautiful location high on the mountain and deep in the forest (more correctly a jungle). Both of them are located a few miles away from Kanpetlet town, and on higher ground that the town. They are also just a few miles away from the base of the Mount Victoria. The first one, Mountain Oasis Resort, is a collection of a few bungalows. Each bungalow has either two or four beds with attached bathroom. Currently, there are now about 10 bungalows. There is also a restaurant which serves nice Burmese, Chinese and European food. Breakfast is included with the room fees. For lunch and dinner, you can order half day in advanced. Electricity is provided by generator at night until 10 PM. No hot water is provided [...]

Guest houses in Kanpetlet, Chin Hills is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

The town is very poor. There is not much business to do. People are also generally poorer than other towns of Chin Hills. Population is also very small compared to other towns. However, this is a very good place to observe the Chin traditional way of life. Kanpetlet is still unspoiled by the modern world. People are still living in the same way hundreds of years ago, even in nearby villages which are not difficult to go. This is also a very nice place to do trekking. Moreover, there is one major tourist attraction in near Kanpetlet. This is Mount Victoria and the Wild Life Reserved. Situated in the area of Kanpetlet Township, Mount Victoria is the highest mountain in Chin Hills. With the height of over 10,000 feet, it is also among the highest in this part of Myanmar. In addition to being the highest mountain in Chin Hills, it is also where hundreds of species of flowers, plants insects and animals live. There are two resorts or guest houses near Kanpetlet, just a few miles away from the town. One is the Mountain Oasis Resort. The other is Pine Tree Resort. Both of them are nice little resorts [...]

Kanpetlet, Chin State (Part-2) is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Have you ever heard of Chin Hills? Have you ever been to Chin Hills? If you are a regular visitor to our blog, you probably might have read about Chin Hills. I posted a few articles about Chin Hills – Chin culture, Chin custom, towns and places in Chin Hills, videos I took from Chin Hills. Talking about Chin Hills would not be complete without Kanpetlet. For me, Kanpetlet is the most beautiful town in Chin Hills. Kanpetlet is a small town in the southern Chin State. With a population of only around 2,000, Kanpetlet probably is the smallest town in Chin State. The town is just about 50 miles away from Mindat, and only 12 miles away from Saw from Yaw region. Most people in Kanpetlet are Chin, but there are now a large number of people from Yaw region, mostly from Saw, migrating to Kanpetlet. About half of the population in Kanpetlet is Christian, while the other half is Buddhists. People are usually friendly and helpful. You will find smiling faces wherever you go in Kanpetlet. The town itself is a very quiet and lovely town. It is built on the slope of the mountain, with large mountains [...]

Kanpetlet, Chin State (Part-1) is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Chin National Day 2007 was held at U Wumthu Maung Stadium in Hakha, Chin State, on 20th of February, 2007. The origin of Chin National Day or Chin State Day dated back to 1948. On 20 February 1948, a people’s assembly was held in Falam, and decided unanimously to reject feudalism and in support of the Union. Since then, February 20 was marked as Chin Day, and ceremonies were held every year. This year’s ceremony was 59th.Starting from 19 February, show rooms and shops were open in U Wumthu Maung Stadium. Chin traditional wrestling competition was also held. At night, Chin fashion show and Chin traditional dances were held in the stadium. On 20 February, winners were given awards, and groups from Hakha and Falam performed traditional dances. After that, “Khaung Kauk Pwe” was held. In ancient time, the sawbwa or local lord chose a girl as her minor wife. The wife to be was accompanied to the sawbwa with a ceremony. That ceremony was named “Khaung Kauk Pwe”. Nowadays, the descendants of former sawbwas do the ceremony just as an honor, to show their former glory. First, the honored maiden was carried on a seat to the ceremony. The [...]

Chin National Day 2007 is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Falam is the capital of Falam District, Northern Chin State. There are two districts in Chin State, Falam in the north and Mindat in the south. Falam, Tiddim, Tunzan and Htantalan constitute Falam District. Before 1965, Falam was the capital of Chin State. However, in 1965 the then Chin State Administration (Chin Uzi) decided to move the capital from Falam to Hakha which is in the center of the state and has potential to expand. Ironically in fact, the Chin State Administration was not moved from Falam, but from Kalay which was in Sagaing State, to Hakha. Although Falam was no longer the capital, it nevertheless retains part of its former glory. There are some two and three storied brick buildings in Falam, and a large and grand Baptist church in the center of the town. Falam was built on the slope of a mountain range, in multiple steps. The town is quite clean and tidy. Girls from Falam are famous to be the most beautiful in the whole Chin State. Almost all the people from Falam are Christians, with majority being Baptists. The living standard is quite high too. Near Falam, you can visit and pay homage to the [...]

Falam – Former capital of Chin Hills is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Buses leave Kalay to Hakha everyday from Tarhan Bus Terminal. There are two bus lines, Chin Taung Tan and Shwe Chindit. One bus each leaves from each line everyday except Sunday. The buses leave the terminal at 5.00 AM in the morning. I took Chin Taung Tan bus on early morning. The bus left the station at 5.15 AM but because it picked up passengers from the town, it was already 6:00 when the bus left Kalay. As soon as the bus left Kalay, the road suddenly went up and started to climb up the mountain. About 15 minutes after leaving Kalay, we stopped at on place on the road on the slope of a mountain, and prayed Lord for protection of the passengers. They prayed in Chin Language. It is customary, whenever somebody leaves for a trip, those left at home pray for the safety of the one. This is a very beautiful custom of Chin people. The road is quite wide and good, with good hard ground. At 8:00 AM we reached Thai Ngin village, 32 miles away from Kalay, where the road to Tiddim started. At 8:40 we reached Var Lone village, 42 miles away from Kalay.
If you are interested in going to Mindat, here is a guide. You cannot go there direct from Yangon. First, go to Pakokku, a big city on the west bank of Irrawaddy (Ayarwaddy). To go to Pakokku, you have two options. One is the direct bus trip to Pakokku from Yangon. The buses are quite old and slow, and carry a lot of goods and cargo. I recommend the second option which is to take a bus to Pagan (Bagan) and from there, cross the Irrawaddy. The bus to Bagan leaves around 3 PM from Yangon, and arrives there around 5 AM the next morning. You can take a ship from Bagan to Pakokku. This ship travels between Bagan and Mandalay, but you can drop in Pakokku. The trip will take around one and half hour. Alternatively, if you are more adventurous, you can take a ferry boat to Pakokku. From the boat pier, you can take a tricycle or a horse cart to Mindat bus station. The station is called “Mindat Gyar Sakhan”, meaning “In between camp”. From there, you take a bus to Mindat. It is actually a Jeep that carries people and goods from Pakokku to Mindat. The town is built along the top of a mountain range that runs east and west. So practically, Mindat is a long line of houses built along the main road with some small side roads fanning out here and there. Situated at 4,860 feet above the sea level, it is cool in summer and very cold in winter. And a lot of rain falls during the rainy season. The best season to visit Mindat is during summer where the weather is cool but not cold, and the roads are dry. As soon as you reach Mindat, you will notice immediately how beautiful the town is. Tall pine trees line the approaching road while distant mountains shadows the town. It is a scenery that will definitely impress the first time visitors.
Hakha, the capital of Chin State, is situated in the Northern Chin State. It is situated over the mountains, at 6,200 feet above sea level. As Chin State is quite hilly, Hakha is built on the slope of a large mountain, in U shape. There is only one main road running along the middle of the city, in a curve U, and the whole city is built along this road. Another road runs from the middle of the city, for a short while, forming the foot of U. Most of the population is Chin with a few Burmese. Most are Christians.
