Kanpetlet is, for me, the most beautiful town in the whole Chin Hills. It is also a tourist attraction, the only tourist attract in Chin state, apart from nearby Mindat, although the yearly visitor is probably less than 100. There is the famous Mount Victoria with Natmataung (Khawnuthom) National Park which is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Myanmar. There are currently two guest houses in Kanpetlet. They are actually small resorts located in a beautiful location high on the mountain and deep in the forest (more correctly a jungle). Both of them are located a few miles away from Kanpetlet town, and on higher ground that the town. They are also just a few miles away from the base of the Mount Victoria. The first one, Mountain Oasis Resort, is a collection of a few bungalows. Each bungalow has either two or four beds with attached bathroom. Currently, there are now about 10 bungalows. There is also a restaurant which serves nice Burmese, Chinese and European food. Breakfast is included with the room fees. For lunch and dinner, you can order half day in advanced. Electricity is provided by generator at night until 10 PM. No hot water is provided [...]

Guest houses in Kanpetlet, Chin Hills is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

The town is very poor. There is not much business to do. People are also generally poorer than other towns of Chin Hills. Population is also very small compared to other towns. However, this is a very good place to observe the Chin traditional way of life. Kanpetlet is still unspoiled by the modern world. People are still living in the same way hundreds of years ago, even in nearby villages which are not difficult to go. This is also a very nice place to do trekking. Moreover, there is one major tourist attraction in near Kanpetlet. This is Mount Victoria and the Wild Life Reserved. Situated in the area of Kanpetlet Township, Mount Victoria is the highest mountain in Chin Hills. With the height of over 10,000 feet, it is also among the highest in this part of Myanmar. In addition to being the highest mountain in Chin Hills, it is also where hundreds of species of flowers, plants insects and animals live. There are two resorts or guest houses near Kanpetlet, just a few miles away from the town. One is the Mountain Oasis Resort. The other is Pine Tree Resort. Both of them are nice little resorts [...]

Kanpetlet, Chin State (Part-2) is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Have you ever heard of Chin Hills? Have you ever been to Chin Hills? If you are a regular visitor to our blog, you probably might have read about Chin Hills. I posted a few articles about Chin Hills – Chin culture, Chin custom, towns and places in Chin Hills, videos I took from Chin Hills. Talking about Chin Hills would not be complete without Kanpetlet. For me, Kanpetlet is the most beautiful town in Chin Hills. Kanpetlet is a small town in the southern Chin State. With a population of only around 2,000, Kanpetlet probably is the smallest town in Chin State. The town is just about 50 miles away from Mindat, and only 12 miles away from Saw from Yaw region. Most people in Kanpetlet are Chin, but there are now a large number of people from Yaw region, mostly from Saw, migrating to Kanpetlet. About half of the population in Kanpetlet is Christian, while the other half is Buddhists. People are usually friendly and helpful. You will find smiling faces wherever you go in Kanpetlet. The town itself is a very quiet and lovely town. It is built on the slope of the mountain, with large mountains [...]

Kanpetlet, Chin State (Part-1) is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Chin Hills State is probably the poorest region in Myanmar. It is also the most difficult region to live and survive. Almost all places in Chin State are mountains and hills, with no flat land; all the towns and villages are built on the mountains where it is very cold or in valleys where malaria is a serious problem. Land for cultivation is so few that the state cannot produce enough rice or food for its entire population. There is not enough jobs for the people, and thousands of Chin youths from towns like Hakha, Falam, Mindat and Kanpetlet go out of Myanmar to work as laborers in nearby countries, especially in Malaysia. With such poor conditions, sad tales of human tragedy are not unheard of. Two years ago, I met a family of four in Chin Hills. I was working there when one day somebody told me of a child admitted to the local township hospital. He was admitted with severe pneumonia and severe malnutrition. The family cannot afford to pay for the medicine and food. They don’t have warm clothes and blankets. The father was attacked by a bear a few years ago while hunting, and become debilitated [...]

A sad tale from Chin Hills is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

This is Chin Bamboo dance. The dancers dance among the bamboo poles which are constantly hitting each other. This dance is very difficult, requiring a very coordinated timing between the dancers and the bamboo holders. One wrong move and your ankle will be hit hard with a bamboo pole. Bamboo dance is not unique only to Chin people. Karen (Kayin) people also has the similar kind of dance with different style. The bamboo dance from karen is more famous in Myanmar but the Chin Bamboo dance is relative unheard of. This was the first time I saw this dance during my visit to Hakha in 2007.
Chin National Day 2009 will be held on 20th of February 2009 at U Wummathumaung Stadium in Hakha. As in previous years, there will be Chin traditional dances of various Chin ethnic races living in Chin Hills State, Chin traditional costume show, Chin traditional wrestling and other Chin traditional ceremonies. Visitors should prepare their trip in advanced and book the room at the only guest house in Hakha, the Zwe Guest House in advanced as rooms are very limited. Unfortunately, foreign tourists are not allowed in this part of Chin Hills, except from UN other NGOs. Local visitors can travel to Hakha and observe the Chin National Day ceremony, and the way of life of Chin people. The ceremonary is to honour the lady who was selected by the local prince as a wife. To honour the lady, the relatives and friends of the lady made this grand ceremony in the past. Nowadays, there is no prince in Chin Land. However, to maintain the ancient tradition, these local people celebrate this ritual during the Chin National Day ceremony. The lady in honour was one of the daughters of a rich business man in Hakha. The lady’s father had to pay for all the expenses for this ceremony.
The first time I traveled to Hakha was in 2004, December. It was cold, dark and wet. The city was constantly under blackout, and there was no internet connection. The next time I went there was in May 2005. The blackout was worse now, with no electricity for the whole city at all for the whole day. Internet was still unheard of for most people.

I traveled back to Hakha again in 2007. This time, things were changed. There was now one internet cafe opened in Hakha. The internet cafe was at Shine Store

Internet cafe in Hakha is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Falam is the capital of Falam District, Northern Chin State. There are two districts in Chin State, Falam in the north and Mindat in the south. Falam, Tiddim, Tunzan and Htantalan constitute Falam District. Before 1965, Falam was the capital of Chin State. However, in 1965 the then Chin State Administration (Chin Uzi) decided to move the capital from Falam to Hakha which is in the center of the state and has potential to expand. Ironically in fact, the Chin State Administration was not moved from Falam, but from Kalay which was in Sagaing State, to Hakha. Although Falam was no longer the capital, it nevertheless retains part of its former glory. There are some two and three storied brick buildings in Falam, and a large and grand Baptist church in the center of the town. Falam was built on the slope of a mountain range, in multiple steps. The town is quite clean and tidy. Girls from Falam are famous to be the most beautiful in the whole Chin State. Almost all the people from Falam are Christians, with majority being Baptists. The living standard is quite high too. Near Falam, you can visit and pay homage to the [...]

Falam – Former capital of Chin Hills is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.
