Although Bagan is the major tourist place in Myanmar, and most visited place in Myanmar by foreign and local tourists, cheap hotels and guest house are still plentiful in Bagan. All of them serve both local and foreign tourists. Below are a few in Nyaung U that are usually recommended by visitors. Please be mindful that most of them have standard or limited facility and might not serve breakfast. During peak tourist season, they may be readily full, so book in advance. May Khalar Guest House My favorite! I stay here whenever I visit Bagan. The owner and the staffs are friendly, and the price is cheap. There is no breakfast provided, but there are many tea shops and cheap (but nice) restaurants near by. The rooms and clean but basic. There is air condition in every room, and hot and cold water is available. There is a back up electric generator during the time of frequent electric outbreak, but it is not enough for air-con. This means, during power cut, you will not have air con. The bath room and toilets are a little worn out, but OK for a cheap guest house. Serves breakfast. Price range from 7 [...]

Hotels and Guest Houses in Bagan Nyaung U – Cheap Budget Accommodation is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

If you are travelling in a tour group, your tour operator will handle all travelling arrangement for you. However, if you are travelling on your own, you will have to take care of your own travelling arrangement in Bagan. But travelling around Bagan is not difficult. Travelling in Bagan is easy for both tourists with a very limited budget to rich tourists. Cheapest – Bicycle My favorite way of travelling in Bagan. I always travel in a bicycle, at least a day, whenever I visit to Bagan (another day is reserved for horse cart travel). Not only it is cheap, you also have freedom to go wherever you want to go. Bagan is such a small place that you can reach most of the temples and pagodas by bicycle. Almost all hotels and guest houses have bicycles, and you can hire bicycles cheaply from many hiring shops in Bagan. It will cost around 1,000 kyat to as high as 3,000 – 4,000 kyat a day, depending on season. Avoid taking bicycle during summer as it is unbearably hot during summer. Also, bring enough oral rehydration salt packets (ORS) as you will lose a lot of swet, water and salt [...]

Going around Bagan is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

While I was living in Chin Hills, I used to travel a lot to Southern Chin towns of Mindat and Kanpetlet quite often. Many a time, I traveled to Chin Hills from Yangon through Bagan. On my way back to Yangon also, I usually stayed in Bagan for a night before continuing my trip. Always, I stayed in the same guest house. It is cheap, clean, tidy, and comfortable with friendly owner and staff. Maykahlar Guest House is a small guest house in Nyaung-Oo town. This is a town just two miles away from old Bagan city. Famous Shwezigone Pagoda is situated in Nyaung-Oo. The guest house is situated on the main road that runs through the town of Nyaung-Oo. It is a two storey brick building with twin bed rooms. The rooms are quite small but enough for two people to stay together. There is an attached bathroom in each room with cold and hot water. (There is a tap for hot water, but I could never make hot water coming out of this tap. May be, the machine is broken.) The beds are clean and comfortable. All the rooms are equipped with air-cons. In case the electricity is [...]

Small friendly guest house in Bagan is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

The Yangon – Bagan bus will first drive along Yangon-Pyay (Prome) road, which is quite a good road compared to other roads in Myanmar. There are very few bumps and the road is generally smooth. Before it enters Pyay (Prome), it will stop at Ye Pyar for dinner at around 7 PM. The restaurant is a nice one which sells delicious Myanmar food. However, there is no English menu. Just go and look at the Myanmar dishes and order the one you like. Don’t try to order something like fried rice or fried noodle which they will have to prepare for you. It might not be on time, and you will miss your dinner. If you don’t want to have dinner there, bring some food with you before you leave Yangon. After about half an hour of rest, the bus resumes its journey again. Before the bus leaves, don’t forget to go to the toilet. Toilet here is quite dirty, but still, it is better than other toilets on the way. You have no choice but to use the toilet even though it is dirty. This is Burma. Once the bus starts its journey again, the loud soap opera or [...]

Bagan by bus from Yangon (Rangoon) – Part 2 is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Cheapest way to travel to Bagan (Pagan) is by bus. However, it is not the most convenient way of travel in Myanmar. The roads are usually rough and bumpy in Myanmar, and buses are usually old, dirty and crowded. But for those who are budget conscious, the following is a rough guide to go to Bagan by bus from Yangon (Rangoon). There are a number of highway buses that run between Yangon and Bagan. Some of them are ordinary buses where buses are very old, dirty, crowded, and slow and carry a lot of cargo together with passengers. However, there are currently two Express bus services between Yangon and Bagan. One is Ye Thu Aung Express and another is Bagan Minthar (Bagan Prince) Express. They are competitors and both of them have more or less the same quality of service. From Yangon, they leave at 3:30 PM everyday from Aung Mingalar Highway Bus Terminal. Both leave Yangon at the same time, although the departure time might be earlier or delayed depending on passenger arrival. If all the passengers arrive before the departure time, they tend to leave 10 to 15 minutes earlier. However, if one or two passengers are late, [...]

Bagan by bus from Yangon (Rangoon) – Part 1 is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Myanmar is a country rich in history, culture, custom and tradition. It also has a number of tourist attractions, with many more unknown and yet undiscovered tourist attractions. Many of Myanmar’s popular tourist attractions are famous all over the world. The following is a brief description of some of Myanmar’s popular and famous tourist attractions. Shwedagon Pagoda – Probably the most famous tourist attraction in Myanmar, Shwedagon is synonymous with Myanmar. Considered to be the oldest pagoda on Earth, it is the centre of Buddhism in Myanmar. The pagoda is believed to be covered in 30 tons of gold (some say 60 tons, no body knows the exact amount), with a large number of jewels buried inside the pagoda. There is also a collection of best Myanmar arts and crafts in Shwedagon as most of the shrines are decorated in best Myanmar sculptures and wood curving. Bagan - Land of thousand pagodas. With more than 2,000 ancient pagodas scattered over and around the ancient capital of Myanmar, Bagan is perhaps the most visited place in Myanmar, and the reason most visitors come to Myanmar. It is the capital of the first Myanmar empire, and was believed to have been built [...]

Myanmar’s Famous and Popular Tourist Attractions is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.

Bagan in Myanmar is a major tourist destination in Myanmar. Perhaps the reason most foreign tourists come and visit Myanmar is to visit Bagan. Traditionally, Bagan is a town for horse carts. It is a very nice experience for anyone visiting Bagan to travel around in a horse cart. Each horse cart driver used to earn around 20,000 to 30,000 kyats (US$ 15 to 25) a day, quite a decent income in Myanmar. However, in recent years, these horse cart drivers see the decline of their popularity among tourists coming to Bagan. Nowadays, most tourists coming to Bagan hire a bicycle to travel around the town instead of hiring a horse cart. Most of the customers who use horse carts are now local tourists. Nowadays, these horse cart drivers find it difficult to earn even 10,000 kyats (around US$ 8). Some foreigners even brought their own bicycles to Bagan! One foreign tourist to Bagan said using bicycle is cheaper and also faster. Bicycle is more useful for me. It is faster compared to horse cart which is quite slow. Bicycle can also provide an exercise. I think it is the reason more and more tourists use bicycles.” Source: Popular Myanmar [...]

More tourists using bicycles in Bagan is an article from Myanmar Today, a site about Myanmar news, culture, custom, information and travel advice.
